A collage and book making/construction workshop that expands your ideas of both
Summer is coming to a close, but what a great time to collect our stories and photos, memories of a great year, a fantastic summer; gather the unique items that pertain to your experiences and us them to create The Concertina Book. A fantastic way to display your keepsakes: have it standing up to show off your artwork or lay it down and let the pages tell a story in themselves.
In this class we'll be creating a hard-backed accordion-style book. We'll learn how to construct the book and then add all the juicy ephemera, vintage photos, stamping, envelopes and any other personal items you'd like to add. This accordion book can hold anything you like.
We'll be working with vintage book pages, ephemera, paper, stamps, using paper and fabric with hand-drawn templates as well as other collage/construction concepts we can explore in this small but mighty Concertina Book.
It's always a good idea to think about who this creation might be for... will it be for inspirational quotes and pages to keep? will it be a baby book? maybe for someone's birthday? I highly recommend people bring personal items, they can be flat or 3-d, fabric, postcards, notes, and photos to use when collaging into your book.
What begins as blank pages becomes an incredible creation and story telling art piece, your unique view…
If you’ve made pieces in any previous craft workshops (cyanotypes, marbled paper, stamps you’ve carved) bring these pieces, let’s use them to collage personal, special pages in your book.
All materials are provided, no experience needed --You may want to bring an apron and your glasses!
ABOUT MOLLY C. MENG
Molly C. Meng studied literature with a personal minor in collecting other people's lives. An obsession with old ledgers, vintage photos. and every single discarded book that exists, her work reimagines the untold stories behind the otherwise forgotten items of every day.
A self-taught artist, the medium of collage in both paper and textiles is Molly's dominant form of communicating. She successfully weaves the elements of ephemera and storytelling into each piece she creates.
The spectacular beauty of the ordinary is elevated with detail in her work. Molly's work has shown nationally in both museums and galleries located in New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Wisconsin and Montana. She has produced large scale commissions for interior designers, personal homes and a number of Prometheus apartment complexes in Northern California.
Other than creating her own artwork, Molly helps adults and young people lean into their unique talent by teaching creative workshops around the U.S. as well as on an annual retreat in the South of France. Molly C. Meng is currently living and working in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.
